Scoring criteria

Task Response 4.0

Strengths

    Weaknesses

    • The essay is extremely short and cuts off before presenting any body paragraphs or an argument.
    • The introduction mentions that there is an argument opposing the trend, but it never develops either side of the issue.
    • The thesis statement is vague and fails to state a clear personal position on the extent of agreement.

Fails to meet minimum length expectations for a full discussion and completely lacks body paragraphs and substantive task coverage, corresponding to Band 4.0.

    Coherence & Cohesion 4.0

    Strengths

      Weaknesses

      • The text is fragmented into an incomplete introduction and a disconnected single-sentence transition.
      • Severe misuse of punctuation breaks apart the introductory sentence awkwardly.
      • Overall progression is absent because the essay ends prematurely.

Coherence is disrupted by severe structural incompleteness and poor punctuation, resulting in disjointed text.

      Lexical Resource 4.5

      Strengths

      • Attempts some topic-appropriate phrasing such as 'improving your qualifications' and 'foreign language'.

      Weaknesses

      • Vocabulary is very basic and limited.
      • Contains spelling errors such as 'eather' and 'opinine'.
      • Lacks precise academic collocations and lexical variety.

Limited vocabulary with frequent spelling errors and basic phrasing restricts the lexical score to 4.5.

      Grammar Range & Accuracy 4.0

      Strengths

      • Attempts complex sentence structures such as 'While it is a commonly held belief...'.

      Weaknesses

      • Contains severe grammatical errors, including pluralization mismatch ('a foreign languages'), missing verbs ('there also an argument'), and severe punctuation/semicolon misuse.
      • Sentence boundary controls fail completely in the opening paragraph.
      • Grammatical control is unstable even across simple clauses.

Frequent major grammatical errors, agreement breakdowns, and severe punctuation faults prevent the score from exceeding Band 4.0.
