While there are compelling reasons to grant students complete autonomy in this regard, I firmly believe that a degree of guidance and institutional structure ultimately serves both individuals and society more effectively.

Those who advocate for complete freedom of choice argue that intrinsic motivation is the cornerstone of genuine academic achievement. When students pursue subjects they are passionate about, they are far more likely to engage deeply with the material, produce original thinking, and sustain the intellectual effort required at degree level. There is also a democratic dimension to this argument: in a free society, compelling adults to study subjects they find uninteresting is a form of paternalism that undermines personal agency. A student with a love of philosophy, for instance, should not be forced into engineering simply because the labour market currently demands it.

However, this position overlooks a critical tension between individual preference and societal need. Universities are not merely spaces for personal enrichment; they are institutions that train the professionals upon whom entire societies depend. If every student gravitated exclusively toward the humanities or the arts — which many find more inherently engaging — nations could face severe shortages in medicine, infrastructure, and technology. Moreover, some students, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds, may lack the breadth of exposure needed to make truly informed choices. Offering structured pathways can protect such students from decisions they may later regret.

A more nuanced solution would involve preserving meaningful student agency while ensuring that core societal needs are met through incentives, scholarships, and well-resourced career guidance rather than compulsion. Students guided well tend to discover passions in fields they had not previously considered.
