Dear Maria,

How are you? I hope you are doing well and everything is good with your family. I am writing because I want to invite you to come and visit me in the next few weeks. It would be so nice to see you again after such a long time!

I have been living in my new apartment for about three months now and I really like it here. The city is very nice and there are many interesting things we can do together. I think you will enjoy it a lot.

If you come, I can show you around the city and we can visit some of the famous places here. There is a beautiful old town center and also a very nice park near my home where we can go for walks. We can also eat in some good restaurants, I know a few places where the food is really delicious.

You can stay in my apartment with me so you don't need to pay for a hotel. I have a spare room and it will be very comfortable for you. Please let me know which dates are good for you and I will try to make everything ready before you arrive.

I really hope you can come because I miss spending time with you and we always have such fun together. It will be great to catch up and talk about everything that has happened.

Please write back soon and tell me if this is possible for you.

With love, Anya

Assessment summary

The response is a well-structured, friendly, and natural informal letter that fully addresses all requirements of the task (inviting a friend, suggesting activities, and offering accommodation). The tone is appropriate for an informal letter to a friend, and the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow. Grammar and vocabulary are generally accurate and natural, though somewhat standard for everyday conversation rather than advanced academic prose.

Scoring criteria

Task Response 7.5

Strengths

  • Fully satisfies all bullet points and communicative requirements of the prompt by inviting the friend, suggesting activities, and offering a place to stay.
  • Maintains a consistent, warm, and appropriate informal tone throughout the letter.

Weaknesses

  • Ideas are somewhat straightforward and lack the deeper elaboration or nuance expected at band 8.0 and above.

The task is fully addressed with a clear purpose, appropriate tone, and relevant details, satisfying all requirements for Band 7.5.

Coherence & Cohesion 7.0

Strengths

  • Paragraphs are logically organized, with each focusing on a distinct aspect of the visit (apartment, activities, accommodation, closing).
  • Cohesive devices and pronouns are used effectively to maintain smooth transitions between sentences.

Weaknesses

  • Relies occasionally on simple coordinating conjunctions (and, so) rather than a wider variety of cohesive devices.

Logical sequencing and paragraphing are clear and manageable, supporting overall readability well.

Lexical Resource 6.5

Strengths

  • Appropriate and natural vocabulary for an informal personal letter (e.g., 'spare room', 'catch up', 'old town center').
  • Spelling and word formation are entirely accurate.

Weaknesses

  • Vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive in places (using words like 'nice' and 'good' multiple times).
  • Lacks less common or idiomatic lexical items.

The vocabulary is adequate for the task with good accuracy, but limited variety keeps it at Band 6.5.

Grammar Range & Accuracy 7.0

Strengths

  • Demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses ('If you come, I can show you around') and relative clauses ('where the food is really delicious').
  • Punctuation and grammar are generally very clean with no disruptive errors.

Weaknesses

  • Contains a comma splice in the third paragraph ('We can also eat in some good restaurants, I know a few places...').

The writing shows good control of grammar and sentence structures, though minor punctuation lapses prevent a higher score.
